The aging process can bring about many challenges. One of these challenges is the impact of chronic diseases, which can affect activities of daily living, reduce quality of life, and increase mortality risk. Seniors’ life expectancy is increasing as well as the risk of developing chronic disease increases with age. In addition, certain diseases occur more often in the senior population. The good news is that many common chronic diseases are preventable and manageable. The prevalence of co-morbid conditions makes treating elderly patients different from other populations. While mortality rates have declined for most chronic diseases, some have increased.

Many of these patients are on numerous medications which can have interactions or serious side effects. Therefore, the treatment or management of a variety of conditions in the elderly population can be a challenge.

This presentation combines the risk factors, patient evaluation, laboratory assessment, prevention and support strategies, dietary and lifestyle recommendations, and novel nutritional therapeutics to support the geriatric patient's overall health and wellbeing.

Over the last several years, levels of stress, insomnia, anxiety, and pain-induced anxiety have skyrocketed and prescriptions in the benzodiazepine class have correspondingly (and exponentially) grown as well. Unfortunately, these drugs are not usually the answer and will often lead to dependence, withdrawal, and tolerance. As clinicians, it’s imperative that we understand the essential roles of GABA -- after all, it’s responsible for 20% of all brain neurotransmitter activity -- and have safer alternatives that can bring the GABAergic system back into balance. In this lecture, we will discuss Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the major inhibitory neurotransmitter of the brain, the intricacies of the GABA receptor, as well as the various drugs, phytoceuticals, and lifestyle measures (including meditation) that modulate GABA release via orthosteric or allosteric mechanisms. We will also discuss the pitfalls of direct GABA supplementation (hint: there is zero blood brain barrier permeability!).

The Role of Benfotiamine in Neurodegeneration

Neuroinflammation is implicated in the pathophysiology of many neurological disorders. This often involves several key steps which when interfered with can prevent the normal resolution of the proinflammatory
state. Central to this is the importance of phytochemicals, antioxidants and various vitamins and minerals. One such important vitamin is thiamine(B1). Vitamin B1 has been found to be helpful in many metabolic reactions involving brain function. Now, research has centered on the fat-soluble form of thiamine, namely benfotiamine. During my presentation, I will review the importance of thiamine and focus on the benefits of benfotiamine and its role in preventing neuroinflammation.

We live in a changed world. A toxic world. These toxicities are adversely affecting epigenetics and contributing to modern diseases, many of them in the past only seen in aging humans. Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC’s) are being linked to metabolic syndrome, obesity, infertility and even dementia.Yet, today’s medical world has not advanced in prophylaxis, identification or treatment of these growing issues. Allopathic interventions are based on treating acute diseases, not knowing how to turn epigenetic tides or reducing exposures or keeping hormone receptors and thus multiple tissues, optimal and functional. Many EDCs act as direct obesogens. This is based on the stunning work of Dr. Bruce Blumberg. These chemicals damage fat stem cells, causing larger fat cells that are harder to shed. These stem cell changes are often at the sacrifice of healthy bone stem cells, promoting two epidemics concurrently: metabolic + osteoporosis.

In this talk you will learn how EDC exposures in the egg, sperm, placenta, amniotic fluid, mother’s milk and throughout life, contribute to harder to shed metabolic syndrome. You will learn not only the critical role of reducing exposure to EDCs, especially prenatally, but also exact supplements and protocols helping to turn away from this growing unhealthy epigenetic tsunami.

Autism is now reached 1 in 36 of children in the United States. With diagnosed autistic children at 1 in 5,000 just 30 years ago. Effective treatment is necessary. No pointing fingers at the suspected cause only discussing treatment.

Oxidative stress seems to have caused inflammation in the brain with damage to the brain cells. Ongoing inflammation inhibits regeneration and neuroplasticity of new brain cells.  By activating resident metabolically active stem cells that can differentiate then transmigrate by traveling to restore the brain function; may be a key solution.

It can facilitate neurogenesis and decrease brain inflammation.  Over 70% results with nonverbal children speaking within 2 weeks and continue to thrive a year after 3 treatments one month apart. Diet and gut health with intra oral spray supplementation are very important. Glutathione with toxic metal removal are key components.

Numerous treatments that can cost up to $50,000 require sedation for the child with very little positive results. One doctor had proposed 40 treatments of hyperbaric that would require sedation for the child. The treatment must be safe for the children and reproducible. The oral products are an intra oral spray in the mouth that is very easily tolerated. The injection we use takes 5 seconds with 2 to 3 minutes of discomfort. Treatments on a trial base have been highly effective. Connecting studies will be presented with treatment protocol at the conference.
